Single-Phase Electric Motors

Heavy-duty 230V single-phase motors with dual-capacitor starting for domestic, commercial and workshop machinery

Single-Phase Electric Motors — engineering concept

Single-Phase Electric Motors

When three-phase electrical power is not available at rural, commercial, or residential locations, high-performance single-phase electric motors are required. Nairobi Power Engineers stocks heavy-duty 230V 50Hz single-phase motors from 0.37 kW (0.5 HP) to 3.7 kW (5.0 HP) in 2-pole (2850 RPM) and 4-pole (1450 RPM) speeds.

Equipped with dual-capacitor technology (Capacitor Start / Capacitor Run - CSCR) and an internal centrifugal switch, our motors deliver massive starting torque (over 2.5x rated torque) to start hard-to-turn compressors, positive displacement pumps, and grain mills effortlessly.

Engineering & Build Highlights

  • Dual capacitor design (CSCR) delivers high starting torque without high running current draw
  • Rugged internal centrifugal switch disconnects the starting capacitor once motor reaches 75% speed
  • Manual thermal overload reset button integrated into the terminal box protects against stalling
  • IP55 weather-protected terminal box with cable gland entry and clearly marked wiring diagram
  • Class F insulation system with tropicalized winding varnish for long life in hot, humid climates
  • Available in B3 foot-mount, B5 large flange, and B14 face-mount configurations

Target Applications & Sectors

Piston air compressors & paint sprayersCommercial laundry washing machines & extractorsAgricultural grain posho mills & animal feed mixersDomestic water booster pumps & shallow well pumpsWoodworking table saws, planers & dust extractorsHydraulic vehicle garage lifts & workshop tyre changers
Single-phase AC produces a pulsating magnetic field rather than a rotating field. The start capacitor creates a 90-degree phase shift in the auxiliary winding, generating the rotating magnetic field required to start the rotor spinning.
Yes. Reversing rotation is accomplished simply by swapping the two auxiliary winding connection links (marked Z1 and Z2) inside the terminal box.
