Untinned bare copper reacts with salt moisture and airborne sulfur, creating a non-conductive black oxide layer that damages crimp connections and causes cable failure. Tin coating prevents galvanic oxidation and guarantees low contact resistance.
NEK 606 is the international Norwegian offshore standard specifying that cable outer sheaths must not swell, soften, or crack when exposed to synthetic drilling muds, lubricating oils, and hydrocarbons.
