BS 1363 sockets incorporate a mandatory mechanical shutter that blocks the live and neutral holes until the longer earth pin is inserted, insulated plug pin sleeves preventing live touch during insertion, and an integral cartridge fuse (BS 1362) inside every plug.

The "X" rating denotes that the switch has been specifically tested and certified to handle the severe capacitive inrush currents generated by modern LED power supplies and fluorescent ballasts without contact welding.
