Detuned Reactor Banks

Harmonic mitigation and resonance-free reactive power compensation for non-linear industrial loads

Detuned Reactor Banks — engineering concept

Detuned Reactor Capacitor Banks

When electrical networks contain substantial non-linear loads (such as variable frequency drives, induction furnaces, LED drivers, and rectifiers), standard capacitor banks can create harmonic resonance, multiplying voltage distortion and causing capacitor explosions or breaker nuisance trips.

NPE designs and manufactures Detuned Reactor Banks incorporating iron-core filter reactors in series with heavy-duty capacitors. Tuned below the lowest prevailing harmonic frequency (typically 189 Hz for 7% detuning or 134 Hz for 14% detuning), our banks absorb reactive power while completely blocking harmonic resonance.

Engineering & Build Highlights

  • Iron-core reactors prevent parallel resonance between the capacitor bank and the supply transformer
  • Series reactor impedance reduces harmonic distortion injected by downstream VFDs and power converters
  • High-voltage 480V/525V rated capacitors easily withstand the fundamental voltage boost created by series reactors
  • Thermal protection sensors embedded inside reactor windings trip the step before over-temperature damage occurs
  • Lovato BF...K contactors and DCRG controllers ensure smooth, arc-free step switching
  • Heavy-gauge ventilated enclosures with high-capacity extraction fans prevent heat build-up

Target Applications & Sectors

Manufacturing plants with > 20% VFD drive capacityPlastic injection, blow moulding & extrusion facilitiesCommercial data centres & telecom server hubsSteel fabrication & welding workshopsPrinting presses & textile processing linesHospital imaging & medical diagnostics power feeds
In a series LC circuit, the reactor causes a fundamental voltage rise across the capacitor terminals (approx. 7% to 14% above mains voltage). On a 415V network, 7% detuning raises terminal voltage to approx. 446V, requiring minimum 480V-rated capacitors.
The capacitors will resonate with the transformer inductance at a harmonic frequency (e.g. 250 Hz or 350 Hz), amplifying harmonic currents by 5x to 10x. This leads to blown fuses, swollen capacitors, tripping breakers, and damaged electronics.
