External Maintenance Bypass Panels (MBP)

Zero-break wrap-around bypass switchboards for seamless online servicing and replacement of critical UPS systems

Overview

External Maintenance Bypass Switchboards

An external wrap-around Maintenance Bypass Panel (MBP) is an indispensable safety and operational component in any mission-critical power scheme. It allows maintenance technicians to completely isolate, de-energize, and service or replace a UPS unit without interrupting power to the downstream server or medical load.

NPE custom-builds wall-mounted and floor-standing MBP panels from 16 A to 1600 A. Featuring heavy-duty Lovato Electric GL series 4-pole switch disconnectors, mechanical interlocking schemes, Castell key systems, and integrated distribution breakers, our panels guarantee zero accidental short circuits or blackout transfers.

Key Features

Engineering & Build Highlights

  • Make-Before-Break (MBB) rotary switches maintain uninterrupted power to connected loads during transfer
  • Trapped-key Castell interlocks prevent the operator from closing the bypass switch out of synchronism with the UPS
  • Complete 4-pole galvanic isolation allows technicians to touch UPS internal DC and AC terminals safely
  • Built-in distribution breaker ways (MCBs / MCCBs) eliminate the need for a separate downstream distribution board
  • Indicator pilot lights confirm "Utility Available", "UPS Normal", and "Bypass Active" modes
  • Compact wall-mounting enclosures designed for easy retrofitting adjacent to existing UPS installations

FAQs
An internal bypass still leaves lethal voltage inside the UPS cabinet. An external wrap-around bypass routes power entirely around the UPS, allowing technicians to completely de-energize and remove the UPS unit from the wall safely without any downtime.
When turning the rotary switch, the auxiliary contact closes first, commanding the UPS to transfer its load to static bypass. Once synchronized, the main contacts close the external wrap-around path, ensuring zero millisecond interruption to the servers.
